26th June 1940

On the 26th. June, 1940, an air raid warning was in progress between 00.11 and 05.01 hours when 12 H.E. bombs were dropped at about 01.50 hours in Chamberlain Road, Holderness Road, Lodge Street, Laburnum Avenue, James Reckitt Avenue, Lee Street, Kelvin Street, Summergangs Road, Westcott Street, Corporation Playing Fields in Westcott Street, the Children's Playground on the west side of East Park. Four houses were demolished and ten were badly damaged and several others were slightly damaged. Overhead trolley wires were blown down but there were no casualties.
