30th July 1940

On the morning of the 30th July 1940 the air raid warning was sounded at 00.30and was in operation until 00.51 hours. Two H E bombs were dropped from an enemy aircraft soon after the sounding of the alarm. The first fell in Porter Street on Mallorys’ shop, the shop being demolished and damage being done to two public houses nearby and dwelling houses in the vicinity. No casualties resulted. The second bomb dropped in Great Passage Street in front of an unoccupied shop which was demolished. Four other shops and houses adjoining were also demolished, whilst dwelling houses in the vicinity were damaged. Only one casualty resulted from this incident, a 13year old girl who was at the time in St. Lukes Street. She was injured by shrapnel.
