Raid No.35

The air raid warning was sounded at 23.10 hours on the 9th April 1941 and the “alert” period lasted until 05.03 on the 10th April. In this raid about 400 incendiary bombs were dropped in the Eastern part of the city and about 100 in the Pearson Park – Princes Avenue area. Two serious fires resulted, one at Courtney Street School and the other at Sculcoates Lane Junior School, both schools being practically gutted. Several minor fires were started in shop and house property but these were effectively dealt with by the Fire Services and no serious damage resulted although a quantity of foodstuffs suffered damage in two shops. Seven people were injured in this raid but there were no civilian deaths.
