Raid No. 26

On the 23rd February 1941 a very heavy HE bomb dropped in De La Pole Avenue during much damage to dwelling houses and causing many casualties, a preliminary record showing 10 killed 23 seriously injured and large numbers suffering from minor injuries. The air raid warning was in operation from 11.15 hours to 01.03 hours. During the same raid HE bombs were dropped on Hedon Road in the cemetery and on a refuse tip in Leads Road, in a field off Clough Road and one alongside Clough Road which was believed to be unexploded. The district was evacuated but the bomb was certified to have been exploded by the Bomb Disposal Squad the following day and the residents were allowed to return.
